For the past several months, the Center for Farmworker Families has been a beneficiary of the New Leaf Markets’ Envirotokens Program. We have received regular funding from the Markets for the purchase of farmworker rent assistance, food, school supplies, prescriptions, and other necessities.
Customers who bring their own shopping bags to the New Leaf Market stores receive envirotokens worth 10 cents. They can then deposit their coins in the store for the charity of their choice. A check representing the total amount in envirotokens deposited for the charity is then sent to the organization.
From June 1 st to June 19th, envirotokens voting will take place INSIDE all New Leaf Market store locations. Center for Farmworker Families is on the ballot (ballot boxes will be set up in each store during the voting period; voting takes place in person only). We want to encourage all supporters of farmworkers to visit their local New Leaf Market location and vote for our organization to be included in the next round of Envirotokens recipients. The top 6 vote recipients in each store will receive Envirotoken donations each month from July 1 st to December 31, 2022.
Farmworkers have had the worst two years I can recall in the decades I have worked with them. The combination of Covid (46,000 have died from Covid), wildfires, and the ongoing drought have compromised their lives and increased the level of poverty they are forced to deal with. Even during this beautiful time of year, farmworkers are only working 4 – 5 hours/day and earning only about $400/week. With high, increasing rents in the area, farmworkers’ financial situation becomes nearly impossible.
Let’s rally behind these people that are responsible for providing us with food. Starting tomorrow, make a trip to the nearest New Leaf Market and vote for the Center for Farmworker Families as a charity of choice.
Thank-you,
Dr. Ann Lopez, Director
